The Mission of Our Program:
The mission of the Holly Grove Elementary Counseling program is to ensure that all students have the necessary support for building academic, personal/social, and career readiness skills to be successful in the classroom, a problem-solver, and a life-long learner.
How Do We Succeed in Our Mission?
We provide a variety of services to help our students learn the skills that they will need to be successful in all areas of life.
Services We Provide to Help Students:
Classroom Guidance
Our goal is to visit each classroom at every grade level with at least one guidance unit per academic school year. Some of the topics we cover are friendship skills, conflict resolution, work habits, bullying, classroom behaviors, empathy training, middle school transition, and testing skills. The topic that is covered depends on the grade and maturity level of the students. Our lessons are typically 30-45 minutes long and several lessons are in each unit. In addition, classroom teachers may request us to address a specific issue with a class lesson.
Small Group Counseling
Counselors meet with groups of students to address specific needs. We do a group needs assessment at the beginning of each year to gain an understanding of what types of groups we need to offer. Groups may meet 4-6 times and usually meet for about 30-40 minutes, often during their lunchtime. The counselors may also meet with groups for conflict resolution as the need arises.
Individual Counseling
Individual counseling for students is brief in nature. We will typically meet with students up to about 6 times maximum for a given problem. If, after that, the problem persists, the counselor will work with the parent or offer outside resources for help should the parent choose to use it. We understand that students need to be in the classroom as much as possible during the school day in order to be successful.
Consultation
We understand that developing helpful partnerships with both parents and teachers is vital for student success. Therefore, counselors are always available to discuss a variety of issues with parents and teachers. We often direct parents to a variety of helpful resources and we share our experience in working with children with varying learning styles.
